Cut the floorboard to size where the Safe Tray will drop into the floor. Install noggins between the joists so the tray is fully supported on all four edges. Fix structural sheet flooring across the joists as the sub-floor. Check the sub-floor is flat and level before proceeding — high or low spots will telegraph through the finished tile.
Before installing the tray, glue the supplied 10 × 60 mm aluminium flashing to the sides of the tray where the tray will go behind walls. Use polyurethane adhesive. These flashing lips sit behind the wall sheeting to form a continuous waterproof upturn.
Position the tray on the floor and mark the drain location and the outside edge of the tray. Remove the tray, cut the floor board and drain hole, and finalise the plumbing connection to the waste pipe (trap and sanitary plumbing per AS/NZS 3500.2).
Glue a 40 × 40 mm aluminium angle to the floor at the outside line of the Safe Tray mark — this is the perimeter water-stop. Apply non-solvent polyurethane adhesive to both the underside of the tray and the sub-floor. Place the tray in position, apply downward pressure, and check level. Weight the tray with bags of mortar or cement to ensure full contact with the sub-floor until the adhesive cures (typically 24 h).
Apply a bead of polyurethane adhesive on the stainless steel plate where the puddle flange will sit. Apply plumb glue to the drain pipe and fix the puddle flange in position, then apply a bead of polyurethane around the outside edge of the puddle flange. Flood test: plug the waste, fill to the top of the tray, hold for 30 minutes — no leaks. Then proceed to wall sheeting, then waterproofing membrane per AS 3740:2021, then tile direct to the tray surface.
Safe Tray itself is covered by the tile finish — clean the tiled surface with a soft cloth or mop using warm soapy water or a mild household detergent. Avoid abrasive cleaners, scourers, solvents and acids on the tile finish.
Australian Polymore Safe Tray (BMC) tile-over shower trays are warranted for five (5) years from the date of purchase against faulty materials or workmanship under normal domestic use. The warranty does not apply to defects caused by incorrect installation, solvent-based adhesives, impact damage, modifications, commercial use, or failure to follow these instructions.
This warranty is in addition to the rights and remedies you have under the Australian Consumer Law (Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (Cth), Schedule 2). The guarantees under the ACL cannot be excluded. Nothing in this warranty affects those rights.
